No. 3: Get Your Study On

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

In this next chapter of the Ten Least Wanted:

Study Guides

I can understand where people might find these somewhat helpful. I must admit that I have never taken the GRE….maybe the information stays relatively the same that a copy of this study guide from 2002 would still hold some useful study tips. The CD-ROM is missing however, and many pages marked up with someone else’s study strategies. I guess I just don’t know if people that are setting out to study for exams such as this are looking for used copies of these guides. I would think that they are going out to the nearest friendly bookseller to purchase the most up to date volume. That might just explain why we have so many of these, and demonstrates exactly why these will most likely not sell when we open our doors.

No. 2: Books Of The Year

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

In high school, with summer approaching and nostalgia setting in, getting your brand-new yearbook and rushing off to fill it with signatures can be fun. And if, many years later at the height of your career, you celebrate the achievements of your friends and colleagues by taking out ads in your industry association’s annual fundraising book, that can be fun too.

But it is not so much fun, when you are collecting books for a nonprofit literacy bookstore, to open a particularly heavy box and discover that it is full of old hardcover ad books, yearbooks, and similar items of what we will diplomatically call ‘specialized interest.’

To judge from this example, 1983 was a banner year for the Greater Tampa Showmen’s Association. Unfortunately, unless you were there, several hundred pages of ads about it will not mean much. Books like these are meant for friends and family. Please keep and share them with yours.

No. 1: Books That Are Not Books

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

I am pleased to bring you the first installment of the “Ten Least Wanted”.

I would just like to let it be known that we are SO thankful for all the donations we get, truly. And these next posts to our blog which will be mildly antagonistic towards a few genres of books, or in this case, non-books, are meant to educate, and not to in anyway downplay our sincere gratitude to those who are supporting our cause.

Okay, I feel better now.

So! On with the sarcastic rhetoric!

Our first sample, The Magazine.

Magazines are enjoyable to read. I subscribe to many of them. But as we are finding, many outdated magazines such as the one here seem to lack the luster they once held, say about 15 years ago. And we have the whole set! 12 issues each from 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995….I think you get the picture.

We love books! Books are our business. So magazines shouldn’t be the only thing to take the bad rap. We don’t need VHS tapes, cassette tapes, records, CD-roms, CDs (with one exception, BOOKS on CD are wonderful!).

Get ready for tomorrow’s intriguing installation!

Ten Least Wanted

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Those of you who know us in real life may wonder how, for all these weeks on end, we have managed to sustain a blog of such relentless optimism and cheer. Where, you have asked, is our native sarcasm? Can we truly be that excited about each and every book that comes our way? You are right, of course. We do revel in the snark when it is justified, and our storage units are starting to get beautifully full. And so for the next two weeks we will be featuring our first Ten Least Wanted: ten book types we cannot really use, do not really need, and would rather not receive in donation ever again.

Coming tomorrow, #1: Books That Are Not Books.

Out Of The Box

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

It is here!

True, it is inside the building where it will do no good at all, but: our book drop box, after much drama and interchange, is in our possession!

It will get set up in the alley next week sometime, and then people will be warmly invited to come drop books in it.

Wahoo!
